The Travelers Championship

The Travelers Championship was formerly known as the Greater Hartford Open. It's actually one of the most highly attended events held annually on the Tour. It routinely ranks second behind only the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale. The Travelers Championship was moved from late August to June in order to be a part of the FedEx Cup and not in the playoffs.

TPC River Highlands is a very popular setting on the PGA Tour. The Travelers Championship plays at a Par-70, and is one of the shorter courses on tour at just 6,844 total yards. But make no mistake; this golf course certainly has its big challenges for those who play this track. One of the exciting parts about the course are the risk-reward decisions that the players can choose. There are several holes, notably the Par-4 15th that measures in at just 296 yds., in which players can to go for the green in one to putt for eagle.

What Happened In 2012?

Australian Marc Leishman went low on Sunday to come from behind and win his first career PGA Tour event. Leishman recorded an 8-under par round of 62 on Sunday's final round in the 2012 Travelers championship to get the win by one shot over 2012 Master champion Bubba Watson, and Charlie Hoffman. He finished two shots ahead of four other players in a tightly packed leaderboard.

2013 Travelers Championship

Justin Rose is fresh off of the first Major Championship win of his career, capturing the 2013 U.S. Open this past week at Merion by two shots over Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. But Rose won't be resting for very long, before he gets going to his next event. That would be the 2013 Traveler's Championship from TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Rose headlines a rather strong field for a PGA Tour event just one week removed from a Major Championship.

Also of note, Hunter Mahan will be in attendance. Mahan held the lead at one point on the front-nine of Sunday at Merion, only to falter on the way in. Other notable players teeing it up at TPC River Highlands will be Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Lee Westwood, Webb Simpson, and Keegan Bradley.

Odds To Win The 2013 Travelers Championship

Justin Rose 14/1 (+1400) - Rose got the career-changing victory he so desperately sought, and that many of us thought would happen years ago. But alas, Rose can now declare himself a Major champion, winning the U.S. Open. Will he have a hangover from the win and the demands now placed on him following the win? Or will he get focused and continue to play well. Rose is the favorite at 14/1 on Travelers Championship betting lines.

Hunter Mahan 16/1 (+1600) - Mahan's finish in the top-five at the U.S. Open was the best Major Championship finish of his career. Never before had he played in the final group of a Major on Sunday. He held up fine on the front-nine, but simply couldn't get things to fall. He should have a much easier time playing TPC River Highlands. There is no question he's playing well, as oddsmakers expect him to contend for a second-straight week.

Bubba Watson 18/1 (+1800) - Watson has a history of success at this track, having won before. He hasn't lived up to expectations since his win at the Masters last year, but coming back to a place he has a winning history with could help. At 18/1, he's a top-five favorite and betting odds on the PGA Tour think he will be a top contender.

Lee Westwood 18/1 (+1800) - An unfortunate 77 in the second round at the U.S. Open might have cost Westwood, for he would have been right there on Sunday. That round was highlighted by a bad bounce off the wicker basket atop the Merion flagpole, which pretty much summed up that day for him. On the whole though, Westwood played very well, and should continue that coming into this week.

Jason Dufner 20/1 (+2000) - Had it not been for a costly triple bogey on the final day at Merion, Dufner had the potential for a very low round and to post the lead score in the clubhouse early. He still finished in the top-10 in another Major though. Oddsmakers think he will be able to build off of that momentum and turn it into success in Connecticut.

The Winner - It's hard to pick the type of player who will win the week after a Major. Will it be someone who contended and played well? Or could it be someone who didn't qualify and comes into the next event well rested? We all know how draining competing in a Major can be. We are going to go with a player who was at Merion last week, and played his way into the top-10. Rickie Fowler was only a few missed putts away from really knocking on the door of a Major win. TPC River Highlands sets up well for him, and we think he will get the win.

Darkhorse Value Bet - At 40/1, Nicolas Colsaerts is a good value bet for this week. Colsaerts finished in the top-10 at the U.S. Open, and showed that his game is in a good state right now. Building off that confidence, expect Colsaerts to play very well this week at the Travelers Championship.
