The FedEx St. Jude Classic

This is a big tournament for the PGA Tour for a couple of reasons. Currently, it sits on the calendar as the tournament prior to the U.S. Open. As such, the FedEx St. Jude Classic could get a great field, or not because of the fact that many like to take the week off prior to a Major championship. For those who do choose to play, it's also a last chance to qualify for the U.S. Open field if they are not yet in.

Another reason this is a big event for the PGA tour is because of the sponsor. FedEx as you know is the main sponsor of the season long championship, the FedEx Cup. As such, the PGA Tour would like to keep this event as one of the premiere non-Major championships with FedEx as the sponsor.

TPC Southwind is a fun course to watch as well, as there are narrow fairways and small greens throughout, placing precision on the approach into the green. At 7,244 yards, it's not exactly short either.

What Happened In 2012?

Dustin Johnson struggled with some injury problems throughout the 2012 PGA Tour season, but the week of the St. Jude Classic he was on his game. Johnson carded rounds of 66 and 67 on the weekend to pull to the top of the leaderboard and win by one shot over John Merrick. There were five other players’ just two shots behind too, so it was tightly contested all day long. It was Johnson's only win of 2012.

2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic

Coming off of the Memorial Tournament where the field was stacked, it's a bit of a different story for the FedEx St. Jude Classic this week from TPC Southwind in Memphis. You won't see the like of Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, but there will be a few big names in the field. It's all about prepping for the U.S. Open next week for those in the field. And for those who aren't, well then this is the last chance for two weeks before the second Major championship of the season gets going.

One name that will be in the field is Phil Mickelson. After opting to bypass on the Memorial tournament, Mickelson is teeing it up for the first time in roughly a month. The last tournament for lefty was a missed cut at the PLAYERS Championship.

When it comes to the favorites to win the 2013 St. Jude Classic, Mickelson is right at the top, but so to are several others.

Odds To Win 2013 St. Jude Classic

Phil Mickelson & Brandt Snedeker 14/1 (+1400) - Mickelson and Snedeker lead the way on the odds to win at TPC Southwind. They are the highest ranked players in the field, so its makes sense, despite the fact that neither has played particularly well over the last stretch. Still, you can bet these two will be laser focused with the U.S. Open next on the slate.

Dustin Johnson 18/1 (+1800) - Johnson is the defending champion at the St. Jude Classic, winning it in his first time playing in 2012. Johnson has been struggling with a back injury though, and has not played 72 holes in a tournament since the Masters in April.

Ryan Palmer 25/1 (+2500) - Palmer finished T3 here at the St. Jude Classic last year, and is coming off of a top-15 performance in his last outing at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. He also carded a top-five at the PLAYERS Championship.

Billy Horschel 28/1 (+2800) - Horschel was arguably the best player in the early 2013 season aside of Tiger Woods. He hasn't continued his great play, but he has the ability to turn it on any week.

Our Picks

The Winner - In a tournament like this, the field seems very wide open. Going off the map here, PGABettingOdds.com is going to go with Robert Karlsson to take it home this week. Karlsson has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but has come as close as possible here at TPC Southwind. He has lost in a playoff two times in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011. Karlsson is coming in at 35/1 to win this week.

Darkhorse Value Bet - Josh Teater finished T15 in the 2010 St. Jude Classic, but has only made two appearances total. Teater is going off at 66/1 this week, coming off of a T57 finish at the Memorial Tournament. He has been a consistent player this year though, right around the top-30 in the FedEx Cup rankings.
